Think Twice Before You Post!
Repercussions of not re-reading your emails, posting on social networks and sending pictures
To post or not to post? That is the question you should ask yourself before posting anything on the internet. With social networks playing such a prominent role in people’s lives today, it is important to think before you post, because once something is put out there in cyber space, it’s there to stay.
Perhaps “think before you post” should be a new golden rule. Too often, people post to a social media site, something they are feeling in that moment, and then face big consequences from it. Anyone who posts to a social media site should keep in mind that everyone can read that post. It seems simple enough to think before you post spur of the moment content, but it is easily forgotten when faced with the laid back social media atmosphere, especially when emotions are running wild. Letting your emotions narrate your posts can lead you down a slippery slope potentially full of serious consequences; ranging from a lecture to the loss of a job. Sharing stories and missed moments with loved ones is perfectly acceptable for social media sites. However, griping about your work or boss could get you fired. Social media sites are not a place to vent frustrations. You need to peel yourself away from your computer screen and talk to a real person if you need to express controversial feelings. Social Networks have given people great power to communicate and share content with people around the world. But, with great power comes great responsibility. Just because you can post anything at any time, doesn’t mean you should.
Every day we see people get caught up in these situations; teachers, executives, even political figures. Pent up frustration from a rough day with the kids or at the office is good to get off your chest, but not through social media sites. Posting scandalous pictures of yourself is also asking for trouble. No amount of lies can get you out of the corner you put yourself in here. Think twice before uploading just any photo of yourself for the world to see. No matter how private your account may be, consider that people you never intended to share it with might see it.
There is no delete button on the internet. Every post or email sent is permanently out in cyber space. Important as it is to think twice about a post, rereading your emails before sending them is also essential. It’s easy to tell whether someone read their email before sending it or not. The most tell-tale sign is a misspelled word that could have been easily avoided. People notice your carelessness in a simple email and doubt your abilities to do any better in the work you are hired for. What could hurt you even more is sending an email to the wrong person. Mixing up a personal email with a work email could be damaging to your career. Just like when speaking, some things sound better in your head and should stay there. Rereading your emails before sending them will eliminate any controversial subject matter that could have negative repercussions.
For every action there is a consequence; be it good or bad. A post you make today will still be around in 20 years. Did you think twice before you posted it? If the answer is no, be prepared for the repercussions if someone finds out it came from you.
